SHOWCASE YOUR IT-RELATED PROJECTS AND CREATIVE WORK AT
THE 2007 UNIVERSITY OF MARY WASHINGTON
STUDENT ACADEMY ON INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES
All UMW students are invited to apply to present projects involving information technologies in the fourth annual University of Mary Washington Student Academy on Information Technologies on Saturday, March 31, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Combs Hall on the Fredericksburg campus.
The daylong event offers UMW students the chance to showcase work they’ve done using information technologies. You’ll present your work before an audience of your peers, UMW faculty and staff, and judges from the worlds of business and education. You will also gain recognition for your efforts, interact with your fellow students and learn from their work, and have fun doing it. There will be prizes for outstanding presentations and poster sessions.
This year, we are inviting students to present projects regardless of whether or not they’re associated with coursework or academic study.
Eligible projects may include multimedia projects/presentations, experiments with gaming and online virtual worlds, video productions, fine arts projects, student-written tutorials, problem-solving exercises/games, CD-ROM applications, computer-assisted designs and/or drafting, computer programs, image databases, web authoring, or other applications of information technologies in your coursework.
Friday, March 23 is the deadline to submit a project for possible inclusion in the academy as a formal presentation or as a poster session.
In addition to student presenters, we encourage any UMW student, staff, or faculty member to attend the event!
If you have questions, contact Martha Burtis (mburtis@umw.edu, 654-1355) or any of the staff of the division of teaching and learning technologies.
We’re pleased that you are considering becoming a valued part of this year’s Student Academy on Information Technology. This event provides an opportunity for students to showcase the work they have done with information technology, inside and outside of the classroom. Projects using technology that are written and/or produced by students are appropriate for these exhibits. We encourage a wide variety of submissions, including both individual and group projects.
Presentation Categories
Projects for presentation might fall into any of the following categories:
* Web authoring
* Presentation technologies (e.g., PowerPoint, digital slide shows)
* Explorations of gaming and online virtual worlds
* Multimedia authoring (video, audio or both) and multimedia projects
* Digital portfolios (text, images, other digital objects)
* Instructional tools
* Programming
* Computer-Aided Design
We realize some projects may fall into other categories, or overlap the categories named above, and we encourage applicants to describe their own categories in the “other” field on the application form. These projects may be strictly academic in nature, but they don’t have to be. We encourage students to present on any IT-related projects or creative work.
Presentation Types
Presentations fall into two types: lecture-demonstrations (maximum 15 minutes) and poster sessions. Lecture-demonstrations will be held in fully multimedia-equipped classrooms. Poster presenters will be supplied with a table, laptop computer, Internet connectivity, and electricity.
Submitting a Presentation
The first step in becoming a presenter is to submit a proposal.
